East Side Gallery Berlin, Germany

The East Side Gallery is an international memorial for freedom. It’s a 1.3km long section of the Berlin Wall that consists of 105 paintings by artists around the world. They were painted in 1990 shortly after the wall came down.

The paintings document a time of change and express the euphoria and hopes for a better future.

Many of the paintings were badly damaged by erosion, graffiti and vandalism, like the one above. Which is a shame, because this one, referred to as “Brotherly Kiss” by Dimitri Vrubel is one of the most famous and photographed painting on the wall.
