Almond Blossoms in Gimmeldingen, Germany

Spring is coming!! In the region we live in, called Rheinland-Pfalz, one of the most anticipated events of the year is the Mandelblütenfest (Almond Blossom Festival) in Gimmeldingen.

While we were a week late on the festival, we did head to Gimmeldingen on a slightly sunny Sunday afternoon to check out the trees and wander the small German village.

The appearance of the first almond blossom is an indication that winter has ended and the festival celebrates the arrival of spring (thank goodness!)

While Gimmeldingen is famous for the festival, the almond blossoms can be seen all along the German Wine Road (Deutsche Weinstrasse). Almond trees have been cultivated in this area for centuries, and I love the look of the pink trees lining the vineyards.

They’re just starting to bloom, and below are a few pictures from the past weekend.  I can’t wait to go back when they’re fully bloomed and the vineyards are in their full grape growing swing. We certainly do live in a beautiful place.
