Parliament in Mainz, Germany

The reason we were originally in Mainz was to visit the Parliament. A few weeks ago, I was at a Women’s Club event and asked my friend Bruni a few questions about government in Germany.

She has a friend that is a member of the Parliament. She introduced me to Ruth Leppla, who in turn invited us to Mainz for a tour.

It was very fascinating, somewhat confusing but very interesting. We arrived at the Deutschhaus Mainz, which is the building the Parliament is in. They have a very nice restaurant and patio. It was a beautiful spring day, so Frau Leepla, Dan and I, Bruni and her husband along with many other members of the group sat on the patio for cake and coffee to discuss her role.

She is a member of the SPD, which, for easy translation could be compared to the Democrats with the opposing party being the CDU, which could be compared to the Republicans.

We learned a lot about the organization of parties, how fundraising and campaigning are different and what issues are “hot” right now.

I won’t go into too many details, as I would probably jumble them and write something horribly wrong creating some sort of political debate I have no business being in. So, just enjoy these pictures.
