The Kindness of Germans (Palatinate Tour)

When Kelly was here, we had this conversation:

Kelly: Who’s your best friend here?
Me: Dan
Kelly: That’s cute, but like really, besides Dan.
Me: Hum… probably Bruni…. She’s 70
Kelly: You would have a 70-year-old German best friend

And I do. I met her through the Women’s Club and we co-host the English Conversation group together. She’s really a great woman. She’s very well travelled, has stories for days and her life goal is to make changes toward a more cohesive relationship between Germans and Americans in our community.

Back in the 70’s or 80’s, her and her husband, Leo, used to guide USO tours for Americans that had jut moved to this area. They would rent a coach and drive around the Palatinate drinking wine and looking at castles, giving them in-depth backgrounds and trivia about each one.

This interested me very much, so Bruni and Leo offered to give Dan and I a private tour of the Pfalz. They picked us up early and we spent the whole day driving around our state checking out castles, trying the local wine and learning about the history of the area.

I know they’re in their 70’s and retired, but they are busy people who graciously took time out of their week to show Dan and I the area. In future posts I will feature all the different places we visited.
